Overview

There is an increase in demand for a clean energy source to eliminate greenhouse gases, reduce dependence on imported fuels, and diversify the energy supply. This is fueling government investments in the construction of wind farms globally. To achieve the target of Net Zero Emissions by 2050 set by many Nations and organizations, significant investments are being made globally for the new construction and expansion of wind farms. As the investment in wind farms is rising, the demand for various wind turbine components such as rotor blades, nacelle, gearbox, generator, tower, and pitch system is also increasing, thereby catalyzing the wind turbine component market growth.

In 2022 wind electricity generation increased by a record 265 TWh (up 14%), reaching more than 2 100 TWh. This was the second highest growth among all renewable power technologies, behind solar PV. However, to get on track with the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, which envisages approximately 7 400 TWh of wind electricity generation in 2030, the average annual generation growth rate needs to increase to about 17%. Achieving this will require increasing annual capacity additions from about 75 GW in 2022 to 350 GW in 2030. Far greater policy and private-sector efforts are needed to achieve this level of capacity growth, with the most important areas for improvement being facilitating permitting for onshore wind and cost reductions for offshore wind.

Stats & Charts

Following two consecutive years of decline, onshore wind capacity additions are on course to rebound by 70% in 2023 to 107 GW, an all-time record amount.

This is mainly due to the commissioning of delayed projects in China following last year’s Covid-19 restrictions. Faster expansion is also expected in Europe and the United States as a result of supply chain challenges pushing project commissioning from 2022 into 2023. On the other hand, offshore wind growth is not expected to match the record expansion it achieved two years ago due to the low volume of projects under construction outside of China.

How It Works?

The combination of practical experience and financial discipline of bringing varies renewable energy projects to fruition is foundation of Superior Performance Energy.

Accurate energy yield calculations start with careful wind data collection and in-depth meteorological analysis. Combining our knowledge of wind resource assessment with our experience in site development and project finance provides unique insight into projects relying on wind resources.

Help and Recommendations

Wind farm planning, both onshore and offshore, will require enhanced sensitivity assessment of the surrounding environment to ensure long-term turbine efficiency and attractive returns on investment. Superior Performance Energy Public can provide guidance to Authorities having jurisdiction and streamline planning through local EPC partners. We can further assist with involvement in the identification of suitable sites for investment and the creation of clear maritime development plans could significantly accelerate the project development process and lead to faster capacity growth.
Lengthy and complicated permitting processes are one of the main challenges to faster deployment of wind power plants in many parts of the world, especially in Europe. Establishing administrative "one-stop shops", developing clear rules and pathways for developers applying for a construction permit, determining strict timeframes for application processing, and public-sector engagement in the identification of land and sea sites for investment could significantly accelerate capacity growth. Superior Performance Energy familiar with the process and have relationships with many local EPC partners in different geographies.
Wind power generation creates well-known challenges for electricity grids and power systems through its variability and uncertainty and distributed nature. Wind power plants in many cases entail upgrades that contribute to their integration in the existing power grid. Besides technical solutions, Superior Performance Energy can bring expertise to navigate through a combination of updated regulation and grid codes, and more innovative solutions for providing ancillary services and other services related to dispatchability.
